Rest In Peace, Macho Man!

Randy “Macho Man” Savage, one of professional wrestling’s greatest stars, died Friday morning at the age 58. My favorite moment from the Macho Man was the self-destruction of the Mega Powers on national television.

On a live NBC prime-time special in February 1989; Savage exploded with jealousy and blamed Hulk Hogan for accidentally “injuring” Miss Elizabeth during their tag-team match against the Twin Towers. He then attacked Hogan leading to the end of the team and a full-on rivalry in which Elizabeth sided with Hogan. This led to an encounter at WrestleMania V, in April, 1989; where Hogan defeated Savage and won back the championship.

See the aftermath below!

Some interesting facts about the “Macho Man”.

  • He played minor league baseball from 1971-74 in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox farm systems.
  • His brother was also a wrestler, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo.
  • He married his personal valet, Miss Elizabeth in 1984. They divorced in 1992.
  • He was the spokesperson for “Slim Jim” beef snacks since 1995. “

Recent photos of Savage had him looking more like Santa Claus, like the photo above from 2008.

Savage was one of the most colorful wrestlers in history. With a gruff voice, high-flying speed and great tactical artistry, Savage became one of my favorite wrestlers to watch back in the 80’s and 90s. His battle with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at WrestleMania III in Detroit was one of the greatest matches in history.

But it was his charismatic personality that made him a legend fans worldwide.

R.I.P., Macho Man!
