Grammy’s Drops Categories, Including Best Contemporary Jazz Album

The Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announce the largest overhaul of categories in the 53 year history of the awards. In 2012, 30 categories will no longer be given out.

Among the most significant omissions in the Jazz field will be awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album; Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual Or Group and Best Latin Jazz Album.

Other awards that will no longer be given in such categories include instrumental categories in Rock and Country; Children’s Spoken-Word album; Zydeco or Cajun music album; Hawaiian and Native American music.  However, Best Pop Instrumental Album will be awarded.

That doesn’t mean that those types of music are ineligible; they will simply compete within larger fields, making the competition for awards much more rigorous. It also makes it much more difficult for artists in lesser-known and less mainstream categories to be recognized.
