In Sacramento, a TV news crew was attacked as they approached a group mourning the death of a young man who was shot and killed outside of an IHOP restaurant.
Friends and family of the murdered man gathered near the restaurant, when a reporter and camera operator from KTXL-TV Fox 40 arrived in the afternoon to see if anyone was willing to talk about the tragic death.
The mourners’ sadness quickly turned to anger as two journalists approached. The camera operator was pulled to the ground by her hair and kicked and the reporter was mobbed and punched in the face.
Here’s a follow up to the story that ran on KTXL on Monday.
Now, what’s happening to journalists in America is nothing compared to what they’re encountering in the Middle East. Many covering the political uprisings are being beaten, raped and even murdered.
However, as hard as the story is and as difficult the topic can be, its important to remember that a free and unbiased press is important for Democracy.
It’s easy for wrongdoing to happen when no one is watching, and with more eyes looking at what’s going on, the less people will be able to get away with it.
Just think, we wouldn’t have had ‘Watergate’ if it wasn’t for a free and unbiased press.
