Musical Chairs in Central New York Radio

Had a hard time trying to find WHEN while I was in Kingston, Ontario this weekend. Now I know why. They changed their format!

It’s musical chairs again in Central New York as the area continues to consolidate the few radio stations in it’s market.

Here’s the current scorecard:

WHEN changed its format from sports talk to urban adult contemporary. It re-branded itself as “Power 620”, simulcasting WPHR 106.9 FM for a short time. It then flipped the FM station to news/talk, simulcasting WSYR-AM 570. It re-branded itself, WSYR-FM.

WLTI changed its call sign to WXTL and flipped from soft rock to a talk radio station. They branded themselves as “105.9 The Big Talker.”

ESPN radio moved from 1260 AM to WTLA 1200 and also set up shop on the FM dial with a translator signal. WTLA formerly offered an adult standards format.

What do the changes mean?  Even less choices for those who can’t afford satellite radio or HD radio.

So much for progress!
