It just kills me how the media has basically convicted legendary New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor for his alleged rape of a 16 year old prostitute in Rockland County, New York.
Once again, news outlets, including the New York Post and Yahoo! Sports have deemed themselves “judge, jury and executioner” in LT’s criminal case. They’re pretty much calling for LT’s expulsion from the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his actions.
How soon we forget the case of the four Duke University lacrosse players who were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a stripper at a frat party. After finding out the woman’s story couldn’t hold water, the county prosecution had to drop all charges, this after the state of North Carolina got involved.
Never mind the charges against LT are just accusations. The last time I heard, in America, you’re innocent until proven guilty in accordance to the law. That means 12 of your peers must find you guilty, not news media outlets.
And as far as the Hall of Fame goes, spare me the tears! LT is, and always will be, the greatest football player of all time! What you do on the playing field should be what matters! What you do off the field is none of my business! (I also think Pete Rose should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame! Baseball writers have no business picking and choosing!)
Malcolm X was on to something when he said, “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”
