Air America Radio, a radio network that was launched in 2004 as a liberal alternative to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative commentators, shut down abruptly due to its financial woes.
The network once boasted high profile talk radio hosts such as Al Franken and Rachel Maddow. But Air America has struggled from the beginning, which included management shake-ups, a bankruptcy in 2006 and sale for $4.25 million the following year. The company ceased airing new programs on Thursday afternoon and said it will soon file to be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
The end of Air America is a huge blow to the Progressive talk radio movement, a victim of the continuous cash flow problems of most terrestrial radio stations and networks. However, it’s not unexpected because there haven’t been many liberal talk show hosts with the range and charisma of Rush and Glenn Beck.
Thankfully, Internet radio has been a “rock” for Progressive and Conservative talk. No doubt, listeners from both sides will be able to find something stimmulating there.
