SoundExchange Becomes Even More Greedy!

Kurt Hanson’s RAIN Newsletter is reporting that SoundExchange wants to double what they’re getting under current pureplay settlements between 2011 and 2016.

SoundExchange, the Internet arm of the Recording Industry Association of America, (RIAA) submitted the proposed rates to the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) last week. The proposed rates start at $0.0021 per performance in 2011 and grow to $0.0029 by 2015.

So now, those webcasters that agreed to the one-sided deal with SX earlier this year could find themselves licking their wounds once again due to the desperate attempts of the recording industry.

Only this time, they’re at the mercy of whatever the CRB decides, without any recourse of litigation.

It’s just like the old saying goes, “Give an inch, and they’ll take a mile!”
