Back in 2000, Butch Charles was the owner of WHCD, back then known as “Smooth FM 106.9FM.” He faced an uphill battle, against powerhouse radio groups; Citadel, Clear Channel and Galaxy, trying to get a cut of the advertising dollars in Central New York.
Forced to sell the radio station, he joined with Clear Channel and took on the programming duties of the newly formed, “Power 106.9”. The format was changed to Urban Contemporary and he was named the evening announcer for a segment called, “The Quiet Storm”, a mix of light r&b music.
Yesterday, Charles was dismissed by Clear Channel in a cost cutting move. His spot will be replaced by syndicated programming.
His former radio station was the reason why “Smooth Jazz and More” Internet radio exists today!
Good luck, Butch! You’ll be missed!
