Oh, my god! It’s been a big day in the television industry!
First, NBC decided to keep Jay Leno in the family by giving him his own show at 10pm. The move virtually eliminates an hour a week programming in favor of a variety-style show.
This move is a bad move in terms of NBC affiliates, as they lose a valuable lead in to their 11pm newscasts. Not to say NBC’s programming of late has been all than great!
This year’s season has been horrible for the peacock network. No new show for NBC has broken the top 20 so far.
I wouldn’t be surprized if you see many affilates leave NBC in the dust. You may see either affiliation switches to other networks or just go independent.
Other news involves layoffs…my old employer Raycom is slashing staff at it’s owned and operated stations. Here’s the tally, so far…
Cleveland – 13
Memphis – 15
Louisville – 7
Albany, Georgia – 15
Charleston, South Carolina – 4
Columbia, South Carolina – 7
Other layoff notices were posted to some employees at companies, such as Hearst, Media General, Lin and Hubbard.
The likely excuse…the downturn in the stock market & lower ad revenue.
